artist reception at cerner

i finally captured what i would consider a solid painting of the downtown kc skyline .. it's a part of the permanent private collection and we like it in a free frame courtesy of the grandview school distirct .. enjoy

the planet in the sky

the other morning on my way to work, i saw a sun that looked like a new planet had mushroomed into our galaxy .. it was so nice that i had to pull over immediately and try to get a good picture .. when i did, a motorcycle cop pulled up beside me and asked what i was doing .. i told him that i was taking a picture of the sun .. at that, he looked forward and said 'what sun' to the slowly shrinking miracle sun behind a cloud of gray .. and he said, 'oh, i see it. i thought you were taking a picture of my officer down there.' at that, i finally saw a motorcycle cop with swirling cherries and lamented that i didn't get a better shot of a sun that a digital picture would do no justice for .. cheers.

portable & royalty free

i was thinking today that i have been painting a lot of images of places i would like to visit or live .. in fact, most have been places that i have briefly visited from time to time .. i was also thinking that i would like to embark on a new series called 'royalty free' and extolling the notion of immortalizing the already immortal copyright free imagery available to us all .. i found some NYC skyline shots and an attractive lighthouse that would be nice to etch with paint .. enjoy the warm sun out there .. cheers ..

in the span of 24 hours, i have relcaimed the coveted photo that i never took .. karen over at KCPT was nice enough to snap a pic of the 'textured jazz' piece that will be up in the new spring acution .. cheers

auctions and lost pics

on saturday, an individual from KCPT came out to pick up a piece for their spring auction .. it's a long ago piece that has an old saxaphone with wiring coming out of the end of it .. after the piece was picked up, I realized it was one of the very, very few paintings I have that does not have a picture of it .. i was going to post it for your viewing pleasure, but no such picture exists .. instead, you can see it when the auction is aired on the television during their spring drive during April 27 - May 5 .. in the meantime, I'm working on getting an auction employee to send me over a pic .. for now you can see the tax receipt and just imagine .. cheers

the other night i grabbed a pic of a very cool cloud of pending storms trying to engulf the sunset .. all around there were cool images of cumulonimbus clouds bringing in thick rains .. enjoy ..

new media and cerner

thanks to august hour productions, we should have some new photo.paint business cards and post cards real soon .. they look very nice .. also, a tentative arrangement has been made with cerner to have a meet/greet and walk through during the second to third week in march .. in addition, a new brochure for my work up a cerner has been published and is being distributed to visitors there at the vision center .. just secured a couple of copies in the mail and will post for your viewing pleasure soon .. i have put a sample of the new post card layout .. cheers ..

firecracker canvass rip

yesterday marked the very first installment of 'performance art' in the photo.paint series .. at the request of mr. west and to satiate a 5 year itch of my own, i staged a milk crate platform to explode a standard canvass .. it was filmed, recorded and a new video can be access by clicking here .. it was a delightul project and the results were both expected and unexpected .. i thought there was gonna be more canvass carnage, but the existing holes were quite nice .. cheers

the project roll

what's going on lately .. ? i'm currently using used wood from a reconstruction process at the st. catherin'es catholic church up the street to make some artwork with crosses as a central theme for an upcoming auction .. each one will have a gold cross against a dreamy blue backdrop with a photo of the church or statutary on the back .. also, i'm getting the whole performance art thing set up with the actual blowing up of a piece of artwork .. this will become a video stroy and will be posted after it's mixed down .. continuing the photo.paint travel project and a new window series will be started very soon .. there also might be a thing at cerner with a walk through and such .. cheers ..

cold morning paint globs

the frigid weather lately hasn't kept me from the garage studio .. in fact, i have gotten to the point where i dig the hot thermous of coffee and heater under the cold thud of heavy air .. after the 10 minutes of warming up to get feeling back into my fingers, i realize that the process of throwing the paints is much better than sleeping .. it's for the birds, you know .. cheers ..

finders keepers?

one of the coolest oddities to happen out of this new 'travel' project is one particular drop off to a now defunct business .. the business is called 'finders keepers' and it's in martin city .. guess the place is closed down for good becuase every time i drive by i still see my painting leaning against their now vacant front doors .. it didn't look out of business because most of the town that is working and alive looks tranquil and out of business .. and sometimes i think i should scoop it back up and instantly pause and realize it's way too classic to fetch it back .. come on - the it's all in the name ..

the danger of adhesives

in the early years of my painting jaunts, i had a real hard time with adhesives .. putting nails through canvasses and other surfaces have later come to cut my fingers to bits .. at one point, i was trying to melt crayon wax onto a canvass that already contained a nice amount of flamable glue and lit the entire canvass on fire .. the flames licked up high and i was on carpeting covered with newsprint .. as i beat the canvass to put the fire out, my hand caught fire and the fire did not change it's conjecture .. in my panic, i continued to beat the canvass until the fire went out .. the result was a pretty badly burnt hand and a near insurance disaster in a home i didn't own .. the morale of this story, is that i now use gorilla glue, good screws and never mince fire with a creation i want to concoct .. cheers ..

new orleans in sketch

my father in law, austinshute.com, recently gave carrie and i some cool sketches from a client of his down in new orleans .. they were from the 60's and his client happened to be a local artist that sent him some composite sketches of landmarks in new orleans .. the originals are in our possession and the dude's name was e. garic .. i had no luck doing a google on him, but these prove he knew what was going on .. cheers ..

final paint home of moby

recently, i had the opportunity to see the final resting space of my 'moby' ticket stub piece .. it's at the BOWSE law firm and it looked rather nice in it's locale .. always nice to see your work in the new home after it's purchase .. and if you all have any of my work in your homes - take a picture and send it on over for public display .. cheers ..

the finger finds a good home

at long last, nearly 9 years in the making, and the painting simply known as 'the finger' is sold to mr. david oliver .. it's in a cleverly decorated office looking over the sprawling buildings of kansas city .. i very happy at it's final destination and wish mr. oliver a good life with a painting that was pondered for possible purchase many, many times over throughout the years .. enjoy ..

Traveling Through Martin City and Kansas

this weekend, we littered the travel photo.paint project through martin city and overland park .. i haven't officially gotten a response back on the drops so far, but if there are silent voices that dig the work, that's fine .. it will continue .. new cities each week .. and as the days pass, you just may be next .. cheers ..

Cerner Show is Officially Hung Today

girl in indigo contest winner

during my first official art show, i had a contest that would guarantee a piece of artwork to the person that would provide the most clever name to one of my paintings .. all the pieces in my first show were untitled and all observers were given latitude to name pieces .. the best story was something somewhat unrelated, but stands as one of the best stories to date .. one random night while the show as going on, i stopped into a midtown bar for a drink and started talking to a gal in her early 40's that was from indiana .. as i went on talking about the town, she mentioned the river market area and the fact that she saw an art show and stole all the post cards from the show .. she said that she felt so guilty that she went to confessional .. and at that point, she menitoned my name and i showed her my driver's license for validity .. i thought she was gonna fall off her bar stool .. she loved my marquee piece and called it 'lady in indigo' .. becuase of her zest and zeal, i later met her at a bar and gave her the marquee piece for being so honest and cool about herself and her existence .. her name was melissa guth and she was deserving of winning that contest .. cheers ..

blow up some art

it's been some time since i thought about this, but i had a very enticing offer on the table for a potential buyer of my art at one time .. during my first public showing ever at the former cup and saucer in the river market area, i told a partially drunk fella that i would make a performance art out of a piece of art .. he liked the piece and contemplated a purchase of a painting that had a long line of fireworks drapsed in thick paint .. i told him if he wanted the piece that i would take a high res photo of the painting, then blow up the firework string, and frame the pristine photo with the mutilated artwork and house them under one nice frame .. i never heard back from this fella .. sometimes, you know ... cheers and the offer is and piece is still on the table ..

what to do with old paint globs?

i recently concocted my first live paint ball .. it's the result of all the acrylic paint i flick off my 6 plastic palletes that harden over time .. it's actually quite nice .. i want to create several more .. enjoy ..

Presidential One Degree

george bush is gonna be in lee's summit, missouri today at the st. luke's hospital doin' a speech talk to some folk .. and i may be a part of the event .. my photo.paint greeting cards are in their gift shop and are for sale .. someone in his entorage may buy some .. and i would love to get presidential or near-presidential money in my pockets to make up for all the taxes they take each month - we shall see or not ..

running towards edges

it's been damned busy lately .. yesterday, cerner graciously escorted the kato and i through the space that will have my artwork starting february one and going through april .. on the other hand, i will be taking down my work at BOWSE law firm on monday jan. 29th .. it has been too short, but delightful to be hanging in my friend mr. west's law firm .. on other fronts, my traveling artwork project is off and going .. i am in omaha, nebraska and should be in las vegas by the weekend .. others are signing up .. things are moving well .. also, i have made enough acrylic paint flecks to have my first official paint ball .. zen boy is gonna construct this .. also, i found a trove of old windows in a yard today and will unravel another window series .. keep your eyes open, it moves damned fast .. cheers ..

musing with mona lisa

i came across a lopsided pic of me in the lourve waiting in front of a hourde of folks to see the mona lisa behind it's enourmous sheath of bullet proof glass .. i never got too close to this painting, but the whole thing was much small than i originally thought .. much smaller .. and there were way, way too many people clamored into this room .. i wonder how many eyes have viewed the world's most famous painting .. anyways, it was nostalgic, but nothing as cool as the sistine chapel or a real dali up close .. cheers ..

brand new easel

as a part of an anniversary gift from my loverly, i have a new easel - my first one in 11 years or so .. my old easel served me well and has been the only one that i had leading up to this one .. it was bittersweet getting rid of it, but it literally fell apart on me .. the easel is like a child or a dog - it has been around for so much and it's damned hard to let 'em go .. i chopped this one up and made some frames for canvasses .. i threw in a pic of the new easel and my first piece produced on this vertical apparatal ..

old studio space

back in the day when i was holed up in an apartment and would make due with the space i had - i made my studio .. it was always rather small and i got paint and smudge all over the place .. the best was when i had carpet .. the stains that needed to be removed off carpeting in the apartment off 11th street was greuling .. it's nice having a garage to spread out in - but, we are always looking for ways to upgrade as the for sale sign in the front yard weaves a bit .. cheers ..

artisitic irony

while on a drive down the highway from dropping my son off for the day, i was thinking about the grand artistic irony, which is this - the impulse to create a painting is much like the impulse potential buyers of my artwork have when they first approach me. i fully realize that the purchase of artwork is not a necessity and requires discretionary income. that said, most folks that say they will come back to me or think it over never do. so, the same impulse that makes me hurtle into a canvass is the same impulse that keeps that fickle buyer from buying a piece of art. i a rather majestic notion that keeps the wheels of art and commerce spinning in the harmony that is delicate. cheers ..

painterly documentary

saw a documentary on george condo the other day and it was done quite well .. the show was well constructed .. he went over and over with one painting and it finally turned out quite well and a helluva lot better than how it started .. it's called 'condo painting' and it's worth a look see if you catch it coming on .. cheers ..

wife's office art

i had the chance to see the new decour in my wife's office and one of the photo.paint pieces works out pretty well in the english department .. if any of you have my art in your homes and wouldn't mind sending me an actual shot of the work in your home/work/residence, it would be much appreciated and prominently profiled in all our technological bounds .. cheers ..

reflection idea in the final '06 hours

i accidentally came across a photo i took years ago as a parody .. it was of an old friend that commissioned me to do a piece of work that he later refused to pay for and sent back my way in the back of my jeep .. as a result, i have learned much from the ado of commissioned work and the meaning of honest friendship .. it now proudly hangs in my living room and we have become quite fond of the piece .. alomst good it was sent back my way .. anyways, i wanted to post this pic for pure comic value - i can't figure out why he would have posed for such a shot, but on the is final day of 2006 it was befitting .. evolution is a nice thing .. cheers kids .. joe d.

cork board marketing

in a huge world of marketing capacities, i find neighborhood cork boards in various shops as the easiest, yet most powerful forms of advertising .. i actually got one of my most successful shows last year by tacking a business card on a board in a local coffeehouse .. just a thought for the day - accompanied by one i tacked on a board recently - enjoy the grayness outside ..

my finest legal hanging ever

my sincere thanks go out to mr. west, sir david oliver and the entire crew on the 12th floor @ the B.O.W.S.E law firm .. not only did i hang most of my 'framed and polished' collection in their fine quarters, i ran into old friends that partook in the photo.paint venture via sales through other shows in '06 .. i really enjoyed sarah shaw's kid art .. i never felt quite right about the 'kill lobster' sale to sir david until i had the chance to view the work in it's natural environment and finalize the dried paint with a autograph on the back .. i'm glad to have an art home in a quality suite downtown looking over our fair city .. keep up the good work over there at the firm and we hope to run into you over a cocktail and laugh very soon .. my best .. joed.
