Why We Do What We Do ..

The other day, my great-grandma in law came over to celebrate my son's Christmas a bit early. During a bit of downtime, my youngest, Miles (5), asked his grandma Lucille to sit down and do some painting. At this urging, the 85-year old Lucille nodded in perplexed, yet content agreement to paint with Miles. As she pondered what to etch, she said that she had never painted anything in her life .. ever. She had never touched a paint brush with paints in her entire life. One of those rare moments of age and coolness in life when you watch with anticipation. Probably the coolest several minutes to see my boy that has been immersed in art his entire life meet his grandma at the proverbial easel as she finally creates her first real painting ..

Art in the Early Days

Growing up, my best friend, Matt Sweeny, and I used to really hit the links and get autographs from a variety of sports figures. From the KC Chiefs practicing in Liberty, MO, to KC Royals players that used to go to malls and golf courses to mingle with the autograph hungry public. My friend Matt passed along when I was 16 and years back his mom gave me his scant baseball/sports card/autograph collection. As a small glimpse into what I consider art from the early years, here's a bit of a tribute to Matt's effort and our friendship ..

possibe mayoral art

After lying these two pieces of kid art down on benches in loose park, i took my son down to the playground. During this time, I watched how folks were interacting with the pieces. Shortly after I placed them, the Mayor of Kansas City, Mark Funhouser, was strolling up with his wife and son. They stopped to peer at the piece and the message on the back, but decided to lay it back down. Good times ..

the coolest thing ..

About 6 years ago I painted up a set of murals with an ex-girlfriend on a coffee table. I held onto the thing for years and it got a lot of compliments. Well, I got to the point that I wanted to have a clean break from the table and any minglings of the past. So, my lovely wife responded to an ad for a school in the KCMO school district that was looking for furniture for a Read 180 room. It was donated and the kids love it. They sent my wife a huge stack of letters addressed to 'Dr. Dimino'. I always wanted to acquire the monicker 'Dr. Dimino' and both my wife and I got it in the coolest possible way. Click here to take a look at the stack of letters. This has to be one of the coolest gifts my wife could have ever given me .. and the fact that a room full of kids dig it is quite cool .. cheers ..

angry red chair

over the last week, miles (4), has been wanting to switch up the artwork on his walls. the other day, he picked one of my favorites in a cool frame i got at a garage sale last summer. it's affectionately called 'the angry red chair'. this was one of our favorite chairs a roommate and i had in my first apartment in midtown. it was a macho chair and i have no idea where it ended up. but, it has been permanently memorialized in paints and graces the miles wall .. enjoy.
